I heard great things about Pamola Bakery & Deli having some mighty fine pastries and desserts down at the River Market in New Westminster. I decided to venture down there today, being a nice sunny day and all.
Sweet vs. Savory Dilemma: When I arrived this afternoon, I decided to pass on my sweet tooth craving and try some of their savory lunch menu items that were Mexican Specialties instead.
What caught my eye was their Tortilla Soup and Tamales – I ordered them both.
I sat down to eat the soup in their pretty little seating area. The soup had a very tasty chicken broth, nicely shredded chicken, right amount of cilantro, nice heat from the pepper and some really good fried tortilla pieces that kept up being crispy until I was almost finished the soup. At first I thought this is a great soup – it has an awesome base that’s for sure. But after dissecting what was in the soup and looking back at the menu board to read the soup description, I felt a little ripped off.
Here’s what the Tortilla Soup Description read: chicken broth with fried tortilla, shredded chicken breast, chipotle pepper, fresh cilantro, onions, sour cream, cheese and guacamole.
Where did the cheese, sour cream and guacamole go? Maybe it was hidden and simmered in the soup, I couldn’t tell what-so-ever.
I would expect for my $6.99 soup that it can be garnished with a dollop of sour cream with cheese and guacamole (or avocado chunks).
Maybe it was just an oversight? Not sure.
Missing Chapter: I chuckled to myself when I thought about Pamola’s tagline: “Every flavor has a story”. Let’s just give them the benefit of doubt and conclude that this soup may be missing a chapter from the story. It was very good base but missing the fixings/garnishes that I would expect on top!
Soup Mistress Rating for Pamola’s Tortilla Soup:
